Booking Cruises

Booking a cruise is very exiting and it opens the door to a world of adventure, relaxation and luxury. Whether you’re a seasoned or a first-time cruiser, there are several key factors to consider to ensure you select the perfect cruise for your needs.

This guide will walk you through the essential steps and look at considerations for booking a cruise, making the process smooth and stress-free.

Determine Your Budget

Your budget is the foundation of your cruise planning. Cruises range widely in price, from affordable options to luxurious, all-inclusive experiences. Here’s what to consider:
  • Cruise Fare: This includes your accommodations, meals and onboard entertainment. Prices can vary based on the cruise line, ship, itinerary and time of year.
  • Additional Costs: Factor in expenses such as transfers, flights to the departure port, onshore excursions, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), gratuities, spa treatments and specialty dining.
  • Travel Insurance: This is highly recommended to protect your money in case of cancellations, medical emergencies, or other unforeseen issues. Please note that not all insurance companies cover cruising so make sure you check that out first before purchasing.

Choose Your Destination and Itinerary

Selecting your destination is one of the most exciting parts of booking a cruise. Popular cruise destinations include:
  • Caribbean: Known for its tropical climate, stunning beaches, and vibrant cultures.
  • Mediterranean: Rich in history, culture, and cuisine, with ports in countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain.
  • Alaska: Offers breath taking natural beauty and wildlife, ideal for adventure and nature lovers.
  • Northern Europe: Features historic cities and stunning fjords, perfect for history buffs and scenic explorers.
  • Asia: Combines ancient cultures with modern cities, offering a diverse range of experiences.

When choosing an itinerary, consider the following:

  • Duration: Cruises can range from short 3-day getaways to extensive 14-day or longer voyages.
  • Ports of Call: Look at the ports included in the itinerary and decide if they align with your interests.
  • Sea Days vs. Port Days: Some people prefer more days at sea for relaxation, while others prefer more ports of call for exploration, try and find your own balance.

Select the Right Cruise Line and Ship

Cruise lines cater to different types of travellers. Here’s a brief overview of some of the major cruise lines:
  • Royal Caribbean: Known for its innovative ships and family-friendly atmosphere, with on board activities like rock climbing, ice skating, and surf simulators.
  • Carnival Cruise Line: Popular for its fun and affordable cruises, appealing to families and young travellers.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Offers a freestyle cruising experience with no set dining times and a variety of onboard activities.
  • Princess Cruises: Known for its elegant ships and destination-focused itineraries, appealing to mature travellers.
  • Celebrity Cruises: Offers a premium experience with modern luxury and high-quality dining.
  • Virgin Voyages: The worlds newest cruise line its over 18’s only and prides themselves on luxury cruising.
  • Disney Cruise Line: Perfect for families of all ages. featuring Disney characters and themed activities and broadway style shows.

Each ship within a cruise line can offer a different experience. Larger ships have more amenities and entertainment options, while smaller ships provide a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

Pick the Right Cabin

Your choice of cabin can significantly impact your cruise experience. Here are the main types of cabins:
  • Interior Cabins: These are the most affordable but they don’t have windows. Ideal for budget-conscious travellers.
  • Oceanview Cabins: These offer a window or porthole with a view of the ocean, providing natural light.
  • Balcony Cabins: These come with a private balcony, allowing you to enjoy the ocean breeze and scenic views from your room.
  • Suites: These are the most luxurious and spacious, often including additional perks and amenities such as priority boarding, exclusive dining options, and more personalized service.

When choosing a cabin, consider factors such as your budget, the amount of time you plan to spend in your cabin and whether you might get seasick (cabins located mid-ship and on lower decks tend to experience less motion). Take into account also the proximity to the elevators (these can be noisy at times).

Book at the Right Time

Timing can affect the price and availability of your cruise. Here are some tips:
  • Early Booking: Booking early (often six months to a year in advance) can secure you the best cabins and sometimes early-bird discounts.
  • Last-Minute Deals: If you’re flexible with your dates and destination, last-minute deals can offer significant savings.
  • Off-Peak Season: Cruises during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) or off-peak times (such as hurricane season in the Caribbean) are often cheaper.

Understand What’s Included

Different cruise lines offer varying levels of inclusivity. Generally, your fare will include:
  • Accommodation: Your cabin or suite.
  • Meals: Most dining options, including main dining rooms and buffets.
  • Entertainment: Shows, live music, and most onboard activities.

Additional costs may include:

  • Specialty Restaurants: Dining at speciality venues often incurs an extra charge.
  • Beverage Packages: Many cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • On shore Excursions: Organised tours and activities at ports of call these can be booked with the cruise line or separate, however, if booked separately please bare in mind it is your responsibility to get back onboard on time.
  • Spa and Fitness : Treatments and specialty fitness classes typically cost extra.

Plan Your Activities

To maximize your cruise experience, plan your activities in advance:
  • On Shore Excursions: Research and book excursions early, as popular tours can sell out quickly. Decide if you prefer to book through the cruise line for convenience or independently for potentially better deals and more unique experiences.
  • Onboard Activities: Familiarize yourself with the ship’s daily schedule, including shows, lectures, fitness classes, and other activities. Some activities and dining experiences may require reservations.

Travel Arrangements

Ensure you have all your travel arrangements in place:
  • Flights and Transfers: Book flights to and from the port city, and consider the timing to avoid tight connections. Many cruise lines offer transfer services from the airport to the port.
  • Pre- and Post-Cruise Accommodation: Consider arriving at your departure port a day early to avoid any travel delays. This also allows you to explore the port city. Similarly, plan for accommodation after your cruise if necessary.

Stay Informed and Connected

Stay informed about your cruise details:
  • Cruise Line App: Many cruise lines have apps with information about the ship, daily schedules, and the ability to book activities.
  • Newsletters and Updates: Sign up for updates from your cruise line to stay informed about any changes or special offers

My Top Tips to help get the best deal!

  1.  Explore all booking sites  – Use my guide above for the different options, prices will vary for the same cruise on different sites.
  2.  Book early – Signing up to newsletters and setting alerts to notify you when new sail dates are out will help. Generally speaking the early you book the cheaper it will be (unless you leave it until last minute – this will have large discounts however you not have much choice of cabin type or location).
  3. Cruising on a budget – If you are working to budget and not too fixed on your cruise destination then a good tip is to enter your holiday dates and filter your search by price – this will bring up the cheapest cruises first. Quite often you will be amazed at how cheap some of the prices can be.
  4.  Loyalty Schemes – Really do take advantage of these, at the time the rewards may seem small but they soon add up to free flight transfers, upgrades or discounts.
  5. Airline credit cards – Many of the bigger chains offer branded credit cards, everyday spending on these with soon give you enough points for Companion vouchers, money off and free flight transfers. (remember to pay any credit cards off in full every month).
  6. Cashback – Use places like Topcashback, Quico and Jam Doughnut to get a percentage back on your cruise if available.
