Booking Car Hire

When it comes to renting a car for your travels, there are various options available, each offering unique benefits and considerations. Let’s explore some of the best places to hire cars, catering to different preferences, budgets, and travel requirements.

Tips for booking and important things to remember:

  •  Getting the correct insurance when renting a car abroad is essential. Different rental companies offer different levels of cover as standard. Always make sure you opt for cover with no access or liability, this maybe a little more expensive to get but its better than being faced with a large bill should there be any accidents or problems.
  • Do your research about driving in the country you are visiting find out if there are any different laws you must follow? Are there any toll roads to pay for?
  • Be realistic with the size of car you book. Take into consideration how may cases you need to fit in the boot, ask yourself will it be easy to park in city centres or is it too big and also how is it comparable to the car that you normally drive (e.g if you drive a small compact car at home but you rent a large mini van on holiday will you be able to transition easily to such a big vehicle.)

1. Rental Car Companies:

Traditional rental car companies like Hertz, Avis, and Alamo have a wide network of locations worldwide, offering a diverse fleet of vehicles to choose from. They typically provide a range of services, including airport pick-up and drop-off, as well as various insurance options for added peace of mind. Rental car companies are a reliable option for travellers who prefer established brands and standardized services.

The great thing about booking direct is that the terms of your rental are always laid out well and clear to understand. here are some of the larger car hire companies.

2. Comparison sites and online travel agents:

Comparison site and online travel agents bring together travellers and rental car companies, offering an easy platform to compare prices and book rental cars from multiple providers. These platforms often provide competitive rates and special deals, making them popular among budget-conscious travellers.

Additionally, some brokers offer flexible cancellation policies or free amendments, providing added flexibility for changing travel plans. If using these platforms take extra care to look at the insurance options and what is included.

3. Turo:

Turo is like Airbnb but for cars, people rent out their vehicles at a price per day including the insurance. It’s really easy and simple to use and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

  1. Download the app to your phone and sign up. Apple / Android
  2. Find the make, model and age of car for you, there are thousands of local hosts to choose from.
  3. Book your trip through the app, choose a protection plan to suit you, and say Hi to your host.
  4. Have the car delivered to you or pick it up. Check in with the app, grab the keys and you’re good to go.

5. Travel Rewards Credit Cards:

Many travel rewards credit cards offer benefits and rewards for car rentals, such as discounts, complimentary insurance coverage, or bonus points/miles. By using a credit card with car rental perks, travellers can maximize savings and enjoy additional benefits like collision damage waivers or roadside assistance. It’s important to review the terms and conditions of your credit card’s rental car benefits to understand the coverage and any limitations. Have a look at:-

6. Package Deals:

When booking flights and accommodation, travellers can often find package deals that include car rentals as part of the package. Websites like Expedia and Virgin Holidays,  offer bundled deals that combine flights, hotels, and rental cars at discounted rates. Booking a package deal can be a convenient way to save money and streamline trip planning, especially for those booking multiple components of their trip at once. Always check you have adequate car insurance cover.

IMPORTANT :
  • When booking any trip always make sure your provider is ATOL protected.
  • Always use a credit card to book your flights as it gives you have better protection should anything go wrong .
  • Always remember to book your Travel insurance as soon as you book anything.

My Top Tips to help get the best deal!

  1.  Explore all booking sites  – Use my guide above for the different options, prices will vary for the same cars on different sites.
  2.  Loyalty Schemes – Really do take advantage of these, at the time the rewards may seem small but they soon add up to free upgrades, fuel or discounts.
  3. Cashback – Use places like topcashback and quico to get a percentage back on your flight if available.
  4. Car Pick Up and Drop off – Airport pick ups and drops offs are generally more expensive, try other locations if they are easily accessible.
