Booking Flights

The way we book our flights has changed significantly over the last 20/30 years, due to the internet.

In this guide, we’ll explore the many places available where you can book flights and in turn get the best value for money.

Most of the websites I have listed below have Mobile Apps available and I would advise you to download the apps and create a dedicated folder on your phone/tablet for these.

From my own experience and in order to get the best deal, the earlier you book your flights the better as generally (unless there is a sale) prices for flights tend go up as they get nearer the date of travel.

If the flights you are trying to book have not been released, then I would always recommend that you sign up to email alerts and notifications on apps so that you know when your potential dates are released.

Online Travel Agencies (OTA’s):

Online travel agencies like Expedia, Opodo, and Travelbag have revolutionized the way we book flights. These platforms gather together flight information from various airlines, allowing you to compare prices, schedules, and amenities conveniently. OTAs often offer competitive prices and bundle deals, combining flights with accommodation and rental cars to provide comprehensive travel packages. I have included the links below for the 3 main ones I would recommend but as always, please let me know if you know of even better ones :-

Flight Comparison Websites:

Flight comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Kayak, and Google Flights are invaluable tools for finding the best flight deals. These platforms scour the internet for flight options across multiple airlines and present them in a user-friendly interface. Features like flexible date searches, price alerts, and interactive maps make it easier to identify the most cost-effective and convenient options for your travel plans. Here are the links to them :-

Direct Airline Websites:
Directly booking through an airline’s website can sometimes get exclusive deals and benefits. Many airlines offer loyalty programs and frequent flyer miles, incentivizing customers to book directly and earn rewards for their travels. Additionally, airline websites provide comprehensive information about their services, including baggage policies, in-flight amenities, and seat selection options, allowing you to make informed decisions when booking your flights.
For European flights try:

For the rest of the world:

IMPORTANT :
  • When booking any trip always make sure your provider is ATOL protected.
  • Always use a credit card to book your flights as you have better protection should anything go wrong .
  • Always remember to book your Travel insurance as soon as you book anything.

My Top Tips to help get the best deal!

  1.  Explore all booking sites  – Use my guide above for the different options, prices will vary for the same flight on different sites.
  2.  Book early – Signing up to newsletters and setting alerts to notify you when flights are out will help. Generally speaking the early you book the cheaper it will be.
  3. Flying on a budget – If you are working to budget and not too fixed on your holiday destination then a good tip is to enter your holiday dates and filter your search by price – this will bring up the cheapest flights first. Quite often you will be amazed at how cheap some of the prices can be.
  4.  Loyalty Schemes – Really do take advantage of these, at the time the rewards may seem small but they soon add up to free flights, upgrades or discounts.
  5. Airline credit cards – Many of the bigger chains offer branded credit cards, everyday spending on these with soon give you enough points for Companion vouchers, money off and free flights. (remember to pay any credit cards off in full every month).
  6. Cashback – Use places like topcashback and quico to get a percentage back on your flight if available.
