How to cope in the heat?

When travelling (especially if there are young children) coping with the heat becomes a top priority. From scorching sunburns to stifling humidity, the hot weather can be challenging for all of us. However, with the right strategies and precautions, you can stay cool, comfortable and healthy throughout your trip. 

In this guide, we’ll explore my essential tips to help you beat the heat and make the most of holiday.

  • Stay Hydrated: 

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is important and is especially important in warmer climates! Consider carrying a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go and ensure you and your family stay hydrated. 

These are a couple of my Favourite reusable bottles:

  • Dress Appropriately:

 Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colours to help keep your body cool. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable and are the best fabrics to wear.  Don’t forget to protect your skin with sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat and/or sunglasses when spending time in the sun.

 

  • Seek Shade:

When the sun is at its strongest, seek shade whenever possible. Shade can significantly lower the temperature and protect you from harmful UV rays. If you’re spending time outdoors, bring along a portable umbrella to create shade or seek out shaded areas like trees or awnings.

  • Use Fans and Air Conditioning: 

Fans and air conditioning can provide much-needed relief from the heat. Make the most of the air conditioning in Department Stores, shops, restaurants and cafes even if its just for 5 minutes to cool down.

  •  Limit Outdoor Activities:

Try and plan your day around the sun. Use the cool mornings and evenings for exploring and when the sun is at its warmest in the afternoon plan an indoor activity such as museums, shopping or you could even take an afternoon nap in your accommodation.

 

  •  Stay Informed:

Stay informed about weather forecasts and temperatures wherever your are. 

Pay attention to the temperatures and humidity to determine how hot it is outside. 

Take extra precautions during hot weather and be prepared to adjust your plans accordingly.

 
  • Stay Hydrated AGAIN!!: 

Yes, this tip is so important it’s worth mentioning twice! Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly in hot weather, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid lots of sugary drinks and alcohol, which can actually dehydrate you further, and limit caffeine intake. Don’t leave your hotel without your reusable water bottle.

 

  • Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness:

 Finally, it’s important to know the signs of heat-related illness and what to do if you or someone else experiences them. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If you or someone else shows signs of heat exhaustion, move to a cool place, drink water and rest. If symptoms worsen or don’t improve, seek medical attention immediately.
