Travelling with toddlers and kids!

Travelling with toddlers and kids can be the best time to make memories with your little ones. While it opens up opportunities for creating lasting memories, it also comes with its own set of challenges. But fear not because with the right preparation and mindset, you can ensure your family trip  is a really enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

In this guide, I have put together my top tips to make travelling with toddlers and kids as easy as possible.

1. Preparation

Preparing to travel with kids is the key to a successful holiday and requires some simple planning and organising.

Start by:

  • Creating a detailed packing list that includes essentials like Nappies, wipes, toiletries, snacks, medication, clothes, sun cream, silicone bibs ( FILOWA Silicon bibs ) and entertainment items.
  • Research child-friendly accommodation and activities at your destination, and consider booking in advance to ensure availability and best prices!
  • Consider and plan where you are staying to make it as easy as possible to get about at your holiday destination (is everything in walking distance or will you need to use a Taxi, Tube, Bus, Train or hire a car and how easy are these forms of transport to use with your toddlers / kids).
  • Make sure travel documents, such as Passports, ESTAs (USA) and GHIC (European Health Insurance Cards), are up to date and easily accessible.
  • Finally, if old enough talk with your children about the upcoming trip, involving them in the planning process to see if there is anything they would really like to do  and set expectations for behaviour and activities.

2. Pack Wisely

When travelling with a young family remember planning is essential and this includes planning on how you will be packing the items you are taking to ensure you have adequate luggage space.

  • Try to avoid taking unnecessary items and (unless your destination is in the middle of nowhere) the chances are there will be shops of some variety close by for you to get any emergency items.
  • Make sure you research your airline and their carry on item allowances, especially for kids this can include prams, car seats or extra bags.
  • Packing Cubes are a great way to organise your cases in order to maximise space and  I love these ones from Eco hub they are made from recycled plastic, are machine washable and come in loads of different colours.

3. Getting those Kids some wheels.

  • Travel prams that can be easily folded and be carried on an airplane as hand luggage are definitely a must have for me, this allows you to use the pram right up to the point you board the plane and you immediately have it available when you land to use in the terminal –  My favourite is the My Babiie MBx5 Ultra compact stroller with its lightweight design, handy carry bag, its reasonably priced and is perfect for the convenience of easily getting about on any trip.
  •  Be ready for your transfers and car hire at your destination with a car seat and depending on the age of your child I have two options :

– For ages 4-11 we love the Bubble bum inflatable booster, Priced at  £34.99 it’s super easy to put in your case and inflate when you arrive.

– If travelling 15 months to 4 years then the Maxi-cosi Nomad Plus is perfect, it folds easy and comes ith its own handy travel bag.

4. Keeping everyone entertained.

When traveling short haul, long haul or for a long journey in the car, activities are something your can’t leave home without and in my opinion the more mess free options the better.

For those tiny travellers I would consider:-

For the bigger boys and girls:-

  • A tablet – I like the Lenovo Tab M10 my son has had his now for about 3 years its durable, has a long battery life and has all the parental controls your need. It has never let us down!
  • A Handheld console – we recently invested in a Nintendo switch. Not only is it great for any journey, but its perfect for family time too either at home or on holiday! Don’t forget your case though, I opted for the STELTH – Neon Red
  • How about a travel journal so they can look back on the trips you took as a family – Lonely Planet do a great one.
  • SNACKS!!!I think its safe to say plane food is nobody’s favourite, I always put together a snack box now for those longer plane journeys and my son (and husband!!) always look forward to it and having a few treats! This pack of two containers is great the compartments are easily adjustable for different snack options – LAifu 2Pcs Plastic container
